Despite the Los Angeles Lakers being this year’s NBA champions, two UAAP stars still became the most talked-about basketball athletes on Twitter in 2020.
Two of the most tweeted about sports accounts in the Philippines this year are University of the Philippines (UP) athlete Ricci Rivero and UP transferee CJ Cansino.
Since 2017, Rivero has topped the list. Meanwhile, Cansino has made headlines recently due to his highly-publicized exit from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) and transfer to UP.
Rivero said, “I am just thankful na all these years, and’yan pa rin sila supporting me online, be it with sports or entertainment. I am just blessed to have been given a platform where I can use my voice to inspire and entertain a lot of people.”
Earlier this year in August, UAAP fans heavily talked about how Rivero openly recruited Cansino to UP. It became a part of the trending topics for the day.
“Hindi biro maging part ng Top 5 ng most tweeted,” Cansino said, saying how much of an honor the recognition is. He also added, “Pero kung iisipin mo naman, it’s more on responsibility na maging good role model, lalo na sa mga taong umiidilo sa ‘yo.”
This year, according to Twitter, around 2 billion tweets worldwide were about sports, despite how the COVID-19 pandemic has postponed and even cancelled several sporting events.
Apart from Rivero and Cansino, who took first and second place, respectively, in the Top 5 most tweeted accounts in the Philippines in 2020, the Lakers, the Miami Heat, and the Golden State Warriors took the other spots.
