Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno reminded hog raisers to avoid the practice of ‘swill feeding’ (pagbahug sa pasaw) to protect their pigs from African Swine Fever (ASF), which hit one mountain barangay (village) in Iligan City.
“I was informed by City Veterinarian Dr. Lucien Anthony Acac about the culling of more than 600 pigs in one mountain barangay in Iligan City and I told him to intensify monitoring of checkpoints in Barangays Besigan, Tignapoloan, Tumpagon and the border shared with Opol town,” Moreno said during Thursday (November 19) noon’s press briefing.
Besides intensifying the city’s information and education campaign to warn hog raisers on African swine fever, Moreno said his executive order covers tracking down the movement and confiscation of canned pork products sourced from areas hard hit by ASF.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) earlier stated that hogs located within 500 km of the infection source will be culled.
The information and education campaign conducted by the city’s anti-ASF task force focuses on backyard hog raisers.
“The national government’s campaign against ASF doesn’t just cover barring the delivery of infected hogs to any area nationwide but also prohibiting the practice of swill feeding. And the City Vet had confiscated pork products and apprehended sellers even if it’s not publicized,” Moreno said.
