Cignal TV and Manila Electric Company (Meralco) subsidiary, Radius Telecoms, announced their plan of creating a new pay TV and home internet service to be called RED Broadband on Tuesday, November 17.

Cignal TV, Inc., a direct-to-home satellite provider transmitting 120 channels, including free, SD, and HD channels throughout the country, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of MediaQuest Holdings, which is under the PLDT Beneficial Trust Fund, a part of the Metro Pacific Investments Corporation led by Manny Pangilinan.

Relatively, Radius Telecoms, the only telecommunications company in the country that offers services on an end-to-end fiber optic platform is also a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Pangilinan conglomerate.

RED Broadband is said to be the Philippine’s newest and most reliable broadband internet provider and will be competing directly with Sky, another pay TV and home broadband service provider which is part of the Lopez Group of Companies.

Pangilinan mentioned earlier in November during a briefing on PLDT’s third-quarter financial results that he has withdrawn his bid to acquire Sky Cable Corp amidst fears that antitrust regulators would review the deal, saying “We withdrew from the bidding for ABS-CBN’s SkyCable since there might be a risk local competition authorities might reverse the transaction a year after the effect of Bayanihan 2.”

RED Broadband will be offering its consumers unlimited fiber internet and pay TV plan for as low as P1,299 per month.
